Portland has the highest number of parks of any city in the United States. This contributes to the city being one of the best places to bring up a family and simply enjoy one of the best quality of life scores of any city in America.
One of the most ambitious projects in the city’s history was the Park Blocks – as series of parks that ran consecutively across the downtown area of Portland. The project had its start in 1848, but it was not long before these consecutive parks were divided into stand-alone spaces. Today the parks are divided into the ‘South Park Blocks’ and the ‘North Park Blocks’ with one of Portland’s favorite spaces, Director Park being located between Yamhill and Taylor on Park.
Director Park falls between the North and South Park blocks and serves as one of the ways the city has found to connect the two blocks.
It was only through the vision of city authorities that Director Park even came into being. In 1995 space was zoned as a 12 story parking lot – but the city decided that the park would add more value to the lives of the citizens of Portland – and so Director Park was born.
Today Director Park is seen as a model urban space that many other cities not only in the United Sates, but urban centers across the world would do well to emulate.
The people of Portland enjoy Director Park for some reasons – but many of these reasons have been recognized by well-known architects and city planners as contributing to what must surely be one of the most attractive and functional public spaces not only in the U.S. but anywhere in the world. There are some reasons for this.
The park has an abundance of seating which means that everyone from office workers to families during weekends will be able to relax and enjoy their time at Director Park.
The park has numerous opportunities for relaxation, including shopping opportunities, restaurants.
It may sound like a failing, but director Park has a limited number of trees. But it also has few buildings within the park confines aside from those who contribute to the relaxing ambiance of the Park. This is not a failing -0 it is a planned feature. It means that the view from one side of the park to the other is uninterrupted. This has implications for safety – and it also means that a stroll in the park is a great way to unwind.
One of the most wonderful things about Director Park is that it is one of the best places in Portland to spend the day with kids. It may not have a playground, but it has something better – a wonderfully designed fountain which is ideal for kids to splash in on the warmer days.
Director Park is a great place to spend the day with the family. It is also a place where office workers can escape to a haven of peace. It is quite simply an almost perfect expression of urban tranquility. Visit if you are ever in Portland.
